Starting December 28th 2010, until the end of January 2011, whenever i am in and able to broadcast, Zender Postoffice will be broadcasting, non-stop, the best music made/released in 2010. I have a list of just over 400 songs to be broadcast. So far only about 100 of those are on this computer, but in the next few days all of them will be put on.

Between December 1st and December 25th 2010, whenever I am in, Zender Postoffice will be streaming non-stop Christmas music.

Between 1st and 17th, it will most likely be on from 16:00-21:00 UTC on weekdays, apart from Tuesdays and Thursdays, in which case it will probably be 17:00-21:00. The most likely time for broadcasting is 16:00-18:00 UTC.

At weekends it may be on during the day. There may be thge occasional live, non-christmas programme, especially on Sunday nights.

SWC Holland Summermeeting 2010

Last weekend was the annual Summermeeting in the Netherlands, a meet-up for SW and MW euro-pirates. The weekend included live polka music, and a radio station, Summermeeting Radio, which broadcast on 6310KHz throughout the weekend. There was also a live webcam stream, and a picture-type webcam which refreshed every 10 seconds or so.

Zender Postoffice will again (hopefully) have a test transmission today, probably starting between 17:00 and 18:00 UTC (6pm-7pm UK time BST).

Online only.

Also, if my parents go out in the afternoon, i will probably be on air then as well.

Online only, with the overflow stream off. If I am on twice today, and the first test goes well, I will probably turn both streams on for the second test.

I'll be testing out trying to do the whole thing in winamp, to minimise skips, because on the recordings i made there appears to be some skipping, and that has also been said in a couple of RX reports.

Again, reception reports by email are very very welcome, and every correct report will be verified with a QSL card.

Zender Postoffice to start

I will soon be putting a station on air, called Zender Postoffice. For the moment it is online only, but hopefully soon it will be on SW and MW.

The first test transmissions will be on the 20th June 2010 at 18:00 UTC (19:00 UK time), online only. The stream will be opened with silence before hand so you can listen to the very beginning. There is a time delay of about 1 minute on the stream, so the audio may not start until 18:01 UTC. Please send us reports by email to zenderpost@hotmail.com to let us know how the stream went, and we will send you a QSL, either by email or post, which is up to you.

After that will be the proper launch online. The date and time for this has not yet been decided, it depends how the tests go, but it will probably be on a Sunday evening.

After the launch, broadcasts will not be at any specific time, but most live broadcasts will be on Sunday evenings. Pre-recorded shows could be played at any time, most likely weeekends and maybe weekday evenings.

Ever tried to record from an internet radio station, but you don't have enough bandwidth? Or for some reason your computer has to be off when you want to make the recording? Here is a solution :o)

FRS Holland on air today

FRS Holland have finished their broadcast on 6400 and 9300KHz. There will be a full repeat from 13:52-18:45 UTC (14:52-19:45 UK Time) on 7600KHz.

I have made a couple of recordings of 6400 from a webtuner at remotehams.com which I will upload soon. If I can receive the 7600 signal at my own QTH, I will try and record the entire broadcast. I will also record as much as I can from webtuners. They may be streaming at http://nednl.net:8000/frsh.m3u

Lots of activity on 48 metres this evening.

Baken 16 heard via SW Germany webtuner on 6375kHz, AM mode, at 15:59-16:25 UK Time, with SINPO 45242. Nothing at my own QTH.

Bluestar Radio on 6215KHz AM, heard at about 1830 at my own QTH on a Freeplay Summit with an indoor longwire, going round my bedroom a few times and up into the loft, coupled with a coathanger loop, designed for use on analogue TV, with SINPO 1-2 5 2-3 4 1-2 later increased power, and heard with SINPO 34433. Also heard on Barneys FT840 with SINPO 4-5 4 4-5 4 4-5, S8-S9. Later switched to 6210, because they were too close ti Mystery Radio on 6220 (heard very weak at my own QTH). Signal just as good, although slightly weaker on Barney's FT840

Two stations heard on 6325 (Doc on Iann's chat said either free or Bata 4), one sounded like a legal station, eg. Radio Romania International, other I could not tell. Heard at my own QTH, with the antenna outlined above.

Mystery Radio on 6220KHz, at about 1900 on Barney's FT840, good signal, SINPO 45444 also on S/W Germany Webtuner, SINPO 5 5 3-4 3-4 4-5 at 1932.

Doctor Who

I'm not sure what I was more excited about last night at 5 past 9 in the evening - the new Doctor Who episode or writing this blog entry about it.

I was out on Saturday and Sunday night, so I only just watched the latest Doctor Who episode last night on a VHS tape on our chunky Alba TV, (on digital :( )

The beginning of the new theme tune was a little dissapointing, I liked the bit not disimilar to Biffy Clyro's 'The Captain', which has been replaced with something that might be heard in a heavy metal song, or perhaps 'Clubwork' from the black & silver keyboards at school (Yes, that's great in context, like in my GCSE Rondo Composition, but not replacing the bit with the same rhythm as 'Love Gun' by Kiss). But it soon went into a thin, vintage sounding synthesiser, with a lovely grey background and old-style credits like on the latest album from Lostprophets. It also had a kind of dark-feeling background that feels nice and retro, but not the same kind as when the men behind Offshore 98 were setting off on the tender to the ship.

Further on through the episode, a message about 'Prisoner Zero' was coming through an ice cream van's speakers (they use wireless?), mobile phones, TV and radio. They must have had it playing on a loop tape (and it must have actually been really low and they the put pitch shift on using a Zoom G2 to get that shaver-like echo) on the whole electromagnetic spectrum, but missed out the sound wave part of the spectrum. The Doctor did some quick DXing and found some foreign radio stations broadcasting the same message in their native languages. Reception was crystal clear, with no static, so his sonic screwdriver must be bigger on the inside and have the best active loop antenna/longwire combination ever. The radio stations must have also switched to FM mode. Since there was very little (or no) static, the Doctor must have pressed the preset buttons. This means that (If the woman who owned the radio conformed to the government) these foreign stations he heard must have been broadcasting on the same frequencies as Heart, BBC Radio 2, and that area's local BBC station (for travel announcments).

The T.A.R.D.I.S was given a makeover as well. And a nice makeover as well, innit. I think I spotted a valve radio up on the shelf, and an oscilloscope, or maybe it was some audio editor on a specially shaped wooden computer with a tiny screen, zoomed in (they need to make a Linux Penguin shaped computer, but that's a different story altogether).

In the end, the girl with the nice name (Amelia Pond) was asked if she would give up her current life to travel with the Doctor (no, not Doctor Tim). And that made me think, would I? Well, there was a valve radio in there, so it wouldn't be possible. Maybe I could have a mix of the two. I could put a MW transmitter on a satellite, like there has been disscussion about on the Radio Caroline Fan Mailing List, and get the Daleks to kill the ionosphere jsut so I can prove Peter right. I could also use the sonic screwdriver to find Eric Gotts' house and send the Daleks there. So the above says I wouldn't, but maybe I still would, I'm really not sure. It would be a very hard decision, but hardly worth making, since its never gonna happen to me (yes, you didn't need to hide behind the settee from the Daleks, they're fake). I should concentrate my energies (not much, since I've broken my toe) to making another decision - Which MW transmitter circuit diagrams should I use, the one in Radio Is My Bomb or the one that Radio Musicmaker sent to me?

There is some speculation as to whether or not the current Radio Caroline is the same Radio Caroline that broadcast from the North Sea, but I won't go into that here. Real or fake, Radio Caroline, run by Peter Moore, has been broadcasting an RSL (when they could have got much more coverage for less money by staying pirate, not giving in to Ofcom) over the Easter weekend. Programmes came live from the Radioship Ross Revenge, moored at Tilbury Docks, Essex. This marks the 46th anniversary of Radio Caroline, which started on Easter weekend 1964, with test transmissions stating 27th March and proper transmissions on 28th.

I made a few recordings of the RSL from Remote Hams using Barney's TenTec RX320D and Oui's Icom-pcr2500. The audio was quite bassy, others have also said this, that is a problem at the station, not my recordings. Here they are:
